What does SASSA stand for and do?
What does SASSA stand for? The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a national organization created by the South African government in 2005 to manage the country’s social security system.
Its main role is to distribute social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development (DSD). While it operates independently, it is overseen by the DSD and the Ministry of Social Development. SASSA was established through the Social Assistance Act of 2004 and the South African Social Security Agency Act of 2004 and is classified as a public entity under the Public Finance Management Act.
The main reason for creating SASSA in 2005 was to centralize the provision of social security assistance, which used to be handled by each province, to tackle corruption and make the service delivery better.
SASSA plays an important role in administering and paying social grants that provide much needed support to a many South Africans.
As of 2022, 46% of South Africans received a social grant. If you ask what does SASSA stand for and some of its core functions, they include processing SASSA Applications for social security assistance, verifying and approving applications, disbursing payments to eligible beneficiaries, and actively preventing and detecting fraud.
