Government Employees’ Pension Fund (GEPF)

One benefit when you are a public servant in South African Government jobs is the Government Employees’ Pension Fund (GEPF).

To explain the GEPF, or Government Employees’ Pension Fund:

GEPF is a defined benefit fund because the Government Employees’ Pension Fund benefits are defined in the Government Employees Pension (GEP) Law and rules and guaranteed to its members.

Members must pay an amount of 7.5% of their pensionable monthly salary to GEPF, to qualify for pension and benefits. The employer will also pay in an extra contribution amount every month.

The Government Employees’ Pension Fund has over 400 000 pensioners and beneficiaries. The Government Employees’ Pension Fund also has more than 1,2 million active members.

According to the GEPF Fund law and rules, the annual pension increase paid to Government Employees’ Pension Fund must be 75% of the average increase in consumer inflation. At a minimum. The consumer inflation period is calculated during 1 December – 30 November of the year before. GEPF will also pay catch-up pension increases if pensions fall behind inflation. Government Employees’ Pension Fund benefits are protected against inflation and protect the value of members’ retirement wealth.

The GEPF Benefits Include:

– Employees that work for a South African Government job and are members of GEPF, qualify for retirement benefits.

– This qualification stretches even to benefits on resignation or discharge.

– If an employee of a South African Government job dies, his or her spouse / family beneficiaries will be paid and can also claim benefits to help pay for funeral costs.

Employees that qualify have South African Government jobs whose services are under the Public Service. These individuals qualify as members of Government Employees’ Pension Fund.
