SASSA social grant application and qualification requirements – our guide.

The following South African SASSA social grants are available:

• Older / senior people grant;
• Disability grant;
• War veterans grant;
• Care dependency grant;
• Foster child grant;
• Child support grant;
• Grant-in-aid;
• Social relief of distress.

SASSA social grant application qualifying requirements:

To qualify for the SASSA grant for older persons, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the SASSA applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
• the SASSA applicant must be living in South Africa;
• the SASSA applicant must be 60 years or older. His/her spouse must comply with the income or means test;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be maintained or cared for in a state institution;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be receiving another social grant for him/ herself;
• the SASSA applicant must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document/s or the smart ID card.

To qualify for the SASSA grant for people with disability, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the SASSA applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee;
• the SASSA applicant must be living in South Africa;
• the SASSA applicant must be aged between 18 and 59 years;
• the SASSA applicant must submit a medical / assessment report that confirms disability and the assessment must not be older than 3 months at date of application;
• the SASSA applicant’s spouse meet the requirements of the means test;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be maintained or cared for in a state institution;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be receiving another social grant for him/ herself;
• the SASSA applicant must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document/s or the smart ID card.

To qualify for the SASSA grant for War veterans, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the SASSA applicant must be a South African citizen or permanent resident;
• the SASSA applicant must be living in South Africa;
• the SASSA applicant must be 60 years and over or must be disabled;
• the SASSA applicant must have fought in the Second World War or the Korean War and the applicant’s spouse must meet the requirements of the means test;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be maintained or cared for in a state institution;
• the SASSA applicant can not already be receiving another social grant for him/ herself;
• the SASSA applicant must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document/s or the smart ID card.

To qualify for the SASSA grant for Foster Child, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the foster parent SASSA applicant and foster child must be living in South Africa;
• the foster parent SASSA applicant must provide a court order that indicates appropriate foster care status;
• the SASSA applicant foster parent must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee;
• the concerning child must be in permanent care of the foster parent(s) and remains so;
• the foster parent and SASSA applicant must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document/s or the smart ID card;
• the foster parent and SASSA applicant must provide a birth certificate for the foster child.

To qualify for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the SASSA applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee;
• The SASSA applicant and child must be living in South Africa;
• the child must be younger than18 years;
• the SASSA applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming the child’s permanent, severe disability;
• the SASSA applicant and spouse must meet requirements of the means test (excluding foster parents);
• The care-dependent child/children SASSA applicants can not already be permanently cared for in a state institution;
• the SASSA applicant must provide birth certificate for the child.
• the SASSA applicant must supply a 13 digit bar coded identity document.

To qualify for the SASSA Child Support Grant, the following criteria needs to be met:

• the primary care giver and SASSA applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee;
• both the SASSA applicant and the child must live in South Africa;
• The child must be younger than and at most 18 years of age;
• the SASSA applicant must provide a birth certificate for the child;
• the SASSA applicant must provide a 13 digit bar coded identity document for the applicant;
• the SASSA applicant must be the primary care giver of the concerning child/children;
• the SASSA applicant must be able to prove that the child/children was born after 31 December 1993;
• the SASSA applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test;
• the SASSA applicant are not allowed to apply for more than six non biological children;
• the concerned child can not be cared for in state institution.

Where and how the SASSA social grant application can be done:

• SASSA social grant application is done at the SASSA Office nearest to where you live;
• In the case of illness or travel-frailty due to old age, a family member or friend can apply for you. In this case you will need to send them with a letter from yourself as applicant, authorising them to apply for you.
• SASSA, upon phone or email request, may make a home visit.
• When your application is completed in front of a SASSA official , you will be given a receipt. Keep this receipt – as your only proof of application;
• SASSA social grant applications are 100% free;
• Unsuccessful SASSA applications are explained in writing;
• You are allowed to request SASSA to reconsider its decision, if your application was declined. If the reconsidered decision is still negative, you have the right to appeal to the Minister of Social Development. To request SASSA to reconsider its decision, you must act within 90 days of being informed of the outcome of your application.
