TVET colleges have super low fees and allow students without matric

TVET colleges offer affordable, low fees for National Certificate Vocational and Study Accredited ICB Courses, even if you don’t have a matric.

TVET colleges train prospective tradespeople with in-demand skills and an industry-related apprenticeship as part of the practical training. The Department of Higher Education and Training subsidizes 80% of the delivery costs, making TVET colleges super affordable.

TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) used to be called FET (Further Education and Training), but there is no difference between the FET and TVET colleges.

TVET education and training is offered to students without matric that is not accepted at a university, or can’t afford to. The student can get a National Senior Certificate (NSC) after completion of Grade 10 to Grade 12 (Matric). Or students can sign up for technical and vocational education and training which prepare them for specific job sectors, positions and self-employment opportunities, often in South African job sectors with skills shortage.

To study at TVET Colleges in South Africa, you must have the following:

Be at least 16 years of age
Have a completed Grade 9 Qualification or ABET Level 4 Certificate

How long does a TVET course take?

Depending on the chosen course, TVET courses take 1,5 to 3 years to complete.

How much does a TVET course cost?

A National Certificate (Vocational) at TVET Colleges is affordable and can typically cost R 7,521 per year.

NSFAS Study Loans

NSFAS is a study loan of R15 750 – R24 000 depending on where you live. This amount is paid directly to your Wallet instead of the TVET College. The study loan has to be paid back after college completion, qualification and finding employment with a salary of R30,000 or more per year.

All you need to know when you apply online as a new TVET student:

Click and register on the “First time here?” block
Go to step 1, placement test
Step 2 online application asks that you upload your ID, proof of residence (e.g. utilities bill) and results
For a NSFAS bursary, upload proof of income and the ID documents of your parents or legal guardians
Fill in everything on the “Pre-Entry Information” and answer every question, even if you write you don’t know
Scan over all your answers. Check spelling is correct and that your details are current
Click on “Finish” when you are done
Please remember: applications are 100% free
The application time for NSFAS loans are typically 1 September to 30 November
Bridging courses are not funded by NSFAS

The TVET Screening Test:

You are required to do a compulsory Career Guidance and Placement Screening Test, which is for recommendation purposes only.

Therefore, it is essential that you complete the screening by yourself and not with the help of a friend.

You will be asked to acknowledge that you made your own course choice.

Apply with your chosen College through their Campus Application Office for the relevant academic year. All College contact details are further down.

TIPS:

Keep your Username and Password safe when doing the Placement Screening Registration. You will need it again to log in for the TVET College screening process as a “Returning User”;

Ask your TVET College about their requirements for a student to attend an adult learning center to complete ABET Level 1 before registering for a National Certificate course.
