Applications are open to 760 x MQA Bursaries for 2023 Academic Year

The Mining Qualifications Authority opens 760 x MQA Bursaries in 2023 Academic Year for application. 700 bursaries are available for grade 12 learners, plus students. Furthermore,  60 bursaries are available for individuals that are currently working within the mining and minerals sector, that wishes to study for mining-related qualifications.

To be considered for the MQA Bursaries, applicants must be South African citizens.

Grade 12 learners, and also those that are currently studying at a TVET College, Public University or University of  Technology, are invited to apply for 700 x MQA Bursaries for 2023, while applications are open.

The MQA bursary will pay: Tuition fees, and;
Allowances for: accommodation, books, and meals.

The following qualifications from universities and universities of technology, are covered by the MQA bursary scheme:

  • Geology
  • Analytical Chemistry;
  • Mine Surveying;
  • Environmental Health and Management;
  • Occupational Health and Safety;
  • Occupational Hygiene;
  • Occupational Medicine;
  • Quality Management;
  • Operations Management;
  • Mining Engineering;
  • Industrial Engineering;
  • Electrical Engineering;
  • Chemical Engineering;
  • Metallurgical Engineering;
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering;
  • Jewellery Design and Manufacturing

TVET college qualifications that are funded by the MQA bursary scheme:

  • Millwright;
  • Electrician;
  • Boilermaker;
  • Fitter and Turner;
  • Rigger Ropes man;
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel):
  • Fitting (including Machinery);
  • Instrumentation Mechanic


Qualifications which are excluded from these 2 lists, but which are considered necessary for the mining and minerals sector by MQA, may receive 20% of the total bursary allocations for the 2023 academic year. 

Candidate preference will be given to the following:

  • Female applicants;
  • Applicants with good academic performance;
  • Applicants from rural communities;
  • Applicants with Historically Disadvantaged Individuals sratus;
  • Applicants that are financially needy, with annual total household income of less than R600 000;
  • Applicants who have applied to study at their local tertiary institutions

60 x additional bursary opportunities

The MQA also invites candidates which are currently working within the mining and minerals sector, and wants to study for mining-related qualifications, to apply for an MQA bursary for the 2023 academic year.

The bursary is NOT open to applicants that are on the Internship Programme or Work Experience (P1/P2) Programme.

60 x bursary opportunities will be available for employed bursars for the 2023 academic year, and for students that are finishing their studies in the second semester of 2022 academic year.

Note: The bursary will cover book tuition and allowances only.
